This being our first feature article as a digital magazine, I wanted to find a way to best illustrate our goal, to show the many ways that an individual can display their creativity. Ways to show just how dedicated people are when displaying their own creative power. What better way to show that than that of the Comic Convention?
There are those who would be taken aback by such a claim. Though, walking through a Comic Convention in some ways is like walking through the State or County Fair. Not only are there delicious treats but there are also so many examples of individual creativity. From the artist that uses canvas to the artist that hand cuts and stitches each leather keychain, there are gifted individuals everywhere. I choose several artists to best capture the imagery I am hoping to convey.
As I walked through the droves of people I wanted to find an artist that captured the true essence of what this type of convention represented but also evoked a stirring of emotion. That is when I came across Sarah Steigers’s booth. Sarah’s work focuses on the subject’s face primarily, conveying the depths of a smile or even the power behind someone’s eyes. The details she adds with the use of charcoal and graphite brings a form of raw honesty that cannot be found even within a portrait. Her work involving Emma Watson is so soft and subtle that it leaves one feeling as though one just met the woman in real life. Her work is definitely something to be experienced.
Another experience is that of The Truffle Cottage. A company comprised of individuals that show their creativity through chocolate. Everything from spaceships to video consoles is represented with every kind of chocolate one can think of. Even chocolate cassette tapes have been created to illustrate symbols of popular movies. There is something for everyone, even if a person is not into the pop culture aspect, they have to admit the chocolate is divine.
Our last stop on the Comic Convention tour is that of PVC Armory. A company made of friends that want to show how creative they can be with PVC pipe. They have come together to make bows (such as bow and arrows). Their bows are not only for display; they have some models that are functional as well. Used in recreating scenes of favorite movies, or to enhance archery skills, even in backdrops of wedding photos, these bows show what happens when a creative mind is put to work.
There are no shortage of artists at the Comic Convention, examples of artistic individuals that pour their heart, soul and talent into their work. Personally, it is an event that I highly recommend. Even if one misses the artistry of the booths, there is no way to miss the creativity that people use in their costumes.
